Getting started

IPTV for beginners: what to check before you subscribe

The practical questions worth settling before you pay for any IPTV subscription, whoever you buy it from.

Most disappointment with IPTV comes from one of five things, and all five can be checked in advance. This page is written to be useful even if you do not end up subscribing with us.

  1. Check your connection before anything else

Run a speed test on the device you intend to watch on, in the room where it will live — not on a laptop sitting next to the router. As general guidance for streaming video, allow roughly 10 to 15 Mbps per high-definition stream and roughly 25 Mbps for 4K, with more for each additional screen. Stability matters as much as the number.

  2. Confirm your device can run a player

This is the step people skip. Smart television platforms differ enormously, even between models from the same manufacturer. Open your television app store and look before you assume. If nothing suitable is there, a streaming stick solves it for far less than a new television.

  3. Count how many people watch at once

Not how many devices you own — how many screens genuinely play at the same time on a normal evening. That number is what you are buying when you choose a connection tier, and it is the most common thing people get wrong in both directions.

  4. Start with a short term

A single month costs little and tells you what a year of marketing copy cannot: whether it works properly on your connection, in your house, on your equipment. Longer terms make sense once you know that.

  5. Ask specific questions before paying

Ask about the exact total, the term length, the number of connections, and whether a channel you care about is carried. A provider who answers those clearly before taking money is telling you something useful about how they will behave afterwards.

Warning signs

Claims worth treating carefully

Applies to any provider, including how you should read this website.

Guaranteed zero buffering

Nobody can guarantee this, because a large part of the outcome is your own home network and connection. A provider who promises it is describing something outside their control.

Perfect uptime figures

A precise uptime percentage means little without independent measurement behind it. Treat a round, unverifiable number as marketing rather than information.

Pressure to decide now

Countdown timers and vanishing discounts exist to stop you thinking. A subscription that is worth buying today will still be worth buying tomorrow.
